California’s very own JPL/Caltech has recently received a bit of prime time attention concerning the development, launch and operational control of the new Orbiting Carbon Observatory OCO-2. California being the State most concerned about saving the planet from the damaging effects of Carbon Dioxide generated by our love affair with fossil fueled automobiles, freeways, big fast airliners, Bar-B-Q’s and last but not least leaf blowers (now providing thousands of jobs for our “undocumented visitors”. We Californians are proud of JPL, I personally have always thought JPL was the “tail wagging the NASA dog”; I have had so many interesting programs associated with JPL over the years that I sort of feel like an alumnus. The orbiting observatory is kind of like a “Big Brother”, it will have no trouble locating California, with solar panels covering much of the State it will appear as a giant passionate purple bag of Mothers Circus Cookies thus the atmosphere above California should show very low levels of carbon dioxide (which may be why California is experiencing a severe drought? [sic]).
OCO-2 is up there right now observing and recording events such as watching us breathe, sleep, belch, burp, pass gas, jog, walk the dog (and make sure you pick-up the poop cause BB is watching), drive to and from work on packed freeways, grilling mouthwatering fat dripping greenhouse gas oozing hamburgers, carne asada and sausages, peering at grazing cattle and dairy cows doing their thing, inspecting termite mounds in Africa, rice paddies in Asia, coal burning power plants in India and China, people cooking and heating with animal dung and Old Mother Earth degassing from every nook and cranny (and I’m betting that earth’s natural degassing accounts for maybe ten times more greenhouse gas than is currently estimated). But this kind of snooping is all Ok, it’s about saving the planet and I want to be the first to give JPL/NASA permission to track and record my carbon footprint, but please no junk email or robo telephone calls. And I’m wondering [sic] if you see an extreme violation, like a seriously smoking BBQ, do you have on-board the capability to laser zap it from space? My annoying neighbor has one of those and I will be pleased to post his GPS numbers, I’ll even plant a laser target marker on his stinking old charcoal burning Weber…
In a more serious vein: OCO-2’s primary science objective is to substantially increase our understanding of how carbon dioxide sources and sinks are geographically distributed on regional scales and changes over time. Atmospheric scientists are excited about OCO-2 because for the first time they will see in real-time where CO2 is coming from, where it is going and most important where it may be hiding because rising levels of carbon dioxide are not warming the planet as IPCC, NASA and NOAA computer models predicted. And why just **CO2, why so much time, money and attention devoted to the study of an atmospheric gas that makes up only about 0.04% of the atmosphere? It’s because CO2 is a vital life sustaining gas, the volume of which have naturally varied greatly over the eons, but what about the other greenhouse gases, a few of which have potentially a more profound impact on the environment than CO2, like maybe water vapor, California needs more of that. And what is the total cost of this mission? Like so many other government funded programs the exact total $’s will never be known but it certainly will exceed $500 million and will breed expensive follow-on missions.
The UN/IPCC, JPL/NASA, NOAA, EPA and so many other Obama Agencies have proclaimed that the anthropogenic theory has been proven a fact via extensive “computer modeling”, furthermore “97% of the world’s scientists so agree”, as does the “popular consensus”, thus “the science is settled, end of the discussion, period”. OCO-2 was the logical next step in gathering additional data that will most likely further support the “popular consensus”. However a growing number of us in the scientific professions are not convinced that the “science is settled”. As members of the scientific community with about 35,000 signatures posted (http://www.petitionproject.org (and maybe 10 times that many who are working in the field thus unable to sign because they want to keep their jobs), we continue to challenge scientific dogma and the anthropogenic agenda in particular because it has its roots in politics, not science. Political, Show Biz and News Media generated popular consensus cannot must not and shall not replace real science...
The obvious and most sought after information the people are seeking and what the media has been heralding was that the OCO-2 mission would finally confirm (or maybe negate) the anthropogenic theory, that rising human related CO2 levels are destroying earth’s environment for human habitation? And that it may be already too late to stop the destruction? In studying http://oco.jpl.nasa.gov information the answers to those specific questions are conspicuous by their absence. It would appear that OCO-2 is just more science for the sake of science building up the CO2 data bank, nothing unusual about that except in this instance it is many millions of taxpayer dollars that is not likely to answer the questions the entire world is asking and was expecting. I and many of my colleagues suggest that OCO-2 be programed to answer those questions, we further suggest that if OCO-2 does not make a sincere scientific effort to do so would in effect mean to citizen taxpayers that $500 million was not well spent…
Over the year’s legions of non-technical but very powerful monied *interests began realizing how easy money can be made by participating in the growing magnitude of over-generous Obama supported government guaranteed and subsidies alternative energy programs. These monied interests and their pocket politicians, bureaucrats and hosts have quickly rallied around the cause stating, with a stifled smirk and a wink, “We can, We must, We shall do all that is necessary to save the Earth”, and that means vigorously promoting and heavily investing in alternative energy schemes while paying lip service to reducing the use of fossil fuel, which of course they all know will continue to be the principal source of energy for many years to come (and guess who is buying those depressed coal stocks?). Eventually solar panels and windmills will fade from media attention and public view scrapped and moved to remote government subsidies recycling stations and landfills as a new enlightened generation rediscovers that nuclear does not produce soot, smog or greenhouse gas. When the big monied stakeholders see nuclear coming along with the same generous government guarantees and subsidies as solar and wind those alternative energy schemes will be quickly thrown under the bus leaving the taxpayers to pay off the guarantees. For a clue as to how the big monied *powers that be work and play pay close attention to Warren Buffett’s actions and his frank remarks regarding his investment in wind power…
It would appear that NASA has become the UN/IPCC’s closest ally, NASA’s “the sky is falling” reports are quickly picked up and posted on Google News, Google’s search engines are finely tuned to instantly detect and post pro-global warming-climate change reports while ignoring all scientific announcements and papers presenting an opposing viewpoint. If you appreciated Facebook’s recent mind manipulations of 700,000 subscribers you will love Google’s manipulations of millions of News Viewer’s minds every day by simply selecting what they post and who they link too, and it’s all perfectly legal. And did you all know that *Google is heavily invested in alternative energy and the demise of fossil fuel?
The following is fantasy, or is it? So what is NASA’s long term goal, why are they so deep into this CO2 scam? Because NASA knows that the very existence of their organization is dependent upon receiving an unlimited Treasury Credit Card, a credit card fully approved and supported by Congress, a credit card to fund the “Exploration of the Universe” “going where no men have gone before” looking for a few nice planets they can invade and colonize (under the UN Flag of course), a new home, a brave new world for all the earths beautiful people (Deniers and Skeptics need not apply) and NASA can do it, they only need the funds to proceed, and they need the funds like right now because it may already be too late to save the planet, and yes the people will go for it, people love science fiction, people want to believe in the fantasy of a clean new world and a fresh start in a Garden of Eden, and bring a machete for the snake.
And the United Nations, what’s their interest? With them it’s the power, the new worlds will have but one government and that will be the United Nations. And Obama, what are his interests? That’s a no brainer; he wants to be the next Secretary General of the United Nations governing the world and the yet undiscovered new worlds. Hey Scotty, beam him up already!
Our concern: The IPCC issues two reports, the Science Report and the Summary for Policymakers Report, the policymakers report is always issued months before the scientific report, many (well at least a few) of the contributors to the science report strive to be non-biased, whereas the policymakers report (supposedly derived from the science report) only promotes the IPCC anthropogenic agenda as their UN Charter specifically dictates, the IPCC is charged with the responsibility to investigate environmental harm caused by humans, they have targeted carbon dioxide from fossil fuel as the culprit, they are only interested in what harm atmospheric CO2 may have on earth’s environment, the fact that it may not be harmful is not a subject of their interest and thus it is ignored, they devote their entire attention to potential negative aspects of human induced CO2 ignoring truth because “the end justifies the means”. The liberal news media makes use of the initial policymakers report and never reviews (could not understand it anyway) the scientific report. Many of us fear that OCO-2 reports may receive the same treatment by the NASA powers that be that will prepare and issue those reports? Therein lays/lies a potential conflict of interests, a dilemma that may be difficult to resolve…
A bit of wishful thinking: In the event that analysis of the carbon oxide data gathered overwhelms the “common consensus” and suggests that human caused CO2 is really not that big of a problem and the earth’s environment is not in the throes of eminent collapse from fossil fuel usage, then what? Watch the economy of the world soar, hundreds of thousands of people will find work in the renewed fossil fuel industry and millions of other people will find jobs supporting those workers who now see the light at the end of what was a dark tunnel, enabling them to finally climb the economic ladder bettering their lives and the lives of their family, neighbors and country. The UN/IPCC, a political organization, will be discredited while NASA, once a scientific organization, turned a political organization under Obama, now regains its position as the worlds most respected space science agency. And “Mother, Apple Pie and the American Flag” are once again celebrated and respected throughout the land…
On the other hand if the OCO-2 reports predict more doom and gloom, and coming on sooner than expected unless drastic measures to reduce carbon dioxide are immediately put into place, we can expect Investments in solar and wind stocks to soar closely followed by shutting down all coal mines and all companies that use coal as fuel in their manufacturing process, the rationing of transportation and heating fuels to 50% of the previous year’s use, the reduction of population following the Club of Rome’s guidelines, reducing meat production by 50%, close all dairy farms as synthetic is environmentally better, and so much more. It is after all about saving the planet so the government will expect the people to accept a few little inconveniences for the short time require for JPL/NASA to find those promised new worlds…
In 1961 President Dwight D. Eisenhower ended his presidential term by warning the nation about the increasing power of the Military-Industrial Complex. In 2016 Obama will end his presidential term praising the ever growing Government-Alternative Energy Industrial Complex…

Ralph Basillo, JPL/NASA Project Manager
Hello Dr. Stofan,
Please allow me to introduce myself, I have deep roots in JPL going back to 1955 as a Transistor Applications Engineer for Philco helping JPL make the transition from vacuum tubes to transistors, in 1959 with Hoffman I was assisting JPL design solar modules for space probes and the solar paddles for Explorer 6. In the ensuing 20 years I assisted my clients on numerous JPL programs concerning solar, telemetry, sensors and instrumentation to the extent that I often felt as an alumnus. I have often publicly stated that JPL is the tail wagging the NASA dog. With that brief introduction and the following discussion I pose for your consideration a few concerns and questions regarding the mission:
It is well known that NASA approves
supports and vigorously promotes the IPCC anthropogenic
agenda, would it not appear that therein lies a conflict
of interests; that perhaps the purpose of OCO-2 is to
gather additional data to support the UN/IPCC mantra: “the
science is settled, the discussion is over?. As you know
the public in general has tuned-out the global
warming/climate change debate however you should be aware
of the questions the World’s informed people are asking
and what the World news media has been heralding:
Question: “Will the mission prove or disprove the anthropogenic theory that human use of fossil fuels are responsible for overloading the atmosphere with CO2, which is causing global warming and climate change, which is rapidly changing the environment to the extent that earth will soon be uninhabitable”, that “humans will not be able to adapt”, and that it “may already be too late to save the planet”?
To deniers and skeptics, many of which
are respected senior members of the scientific community,
it appears that the foxes at NASA have launched a
carefully stacked hen house; the feathers (data) that fall
to earth may be manipulated to support the IPCC agenda. I
for one do not share that rational, I choose to believe
that the OCO-2 Team are sincere scientists doing real
science for the benefit of mankind and the data gathered
during the mission will be scientifically analyzed and
presented to the public without bias.
Our concern: I am sure you are aware the IPCC issues two reports, the Science Report and the Summary for Policymakers Report, the policymakers report is always issued months before the scientific report, many (but not all) of the contributors to the science report strive to be non-biased whereas the policymakers report only promotes the IPCC agenda. The liberal news media makes use of the initial policymakers report and never reviews the scientific report. Many of us suspect that the JPL Scientific Report will receive the same treatment by the NASA powers that be that will issue the main report?
With all the programs you have on your plate this one may not be a priority, maybe it should be. Your early comments would be most appreciated. I wish the OCO-2 team good luck; I hope the data gathered meets JPL/NASA’s expectations and that your computer models remain free of the IPCC virus…
